Q When is the application deadline?

The application deadline varies amongst colleges and faculties and between the University of Saskatchewan and University of Regina. To avoid disappointment apply early; however, if you miss the deadline for the college or faculty of your choice you may still take classes through the College of Arts and Science and the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Science. For more specific deadlines refer to the University of Regina or University of Saskatchewan website or contact one of the college’s academic advisors.

Q How do I apply to take university classes at Great Plains College?

You do not need to apply to Great Plains College; however you will need to apply and be accepted to the University of Saskatchewan or University of Regina to take classes at Great Plains College.

Q I’ve been accepted to university, what’s next?

Make an appointment with the college’s counsellor to choose and register for your classes. Watch for a notice in the mail and newspaper about a university orientation held in late August to discuss a variety of topics related to you being a university student at Great Plains College.

Q What are the entrance requirements?

Entrance requirements vary depending on your Faculty or College. For more specific information refer to the University of Saskatchewan or University of Regina websites or contact one of GPC’s advisors.

Q How much does it cost to go to university?

There is no application fee to attend university at Great Plains College; however Great Plains College student fees may apply. The University of Regina and University of Saskatchewan each charge an application fee and assess tuition fees depending on your Faculty or College. On average, classes at Great Plains College cost about $500 and tuition is payable to the university with which you enroll.

Q How do I apply for entrance scholarships at Great Plains College?

University applicants should submit a GPC application form and a copy of high school or post secondary transcripts to Great Plains College to be assessed for an entrance scholarship. Great Plains offers entrance scholarships to students attending university courses at the college based on the applicant’s high school or post secondary (if any) marks. In addition, applicants are also able to use scholarship money they may have received directly from the University of Regina or the University of Saskatchewan.

Q Can I work full time and still take university classes at Great Plains College?

Yes, classes are scheduled so that students can attend either on a full time or part time basis.

Q Can I complete a full degree at Great Plains College?

Yes. Great Plains College offers the first year in many faculties and students can complete a 4 year Social Work degree from the University of Regina; a 3 year Sociology degree from the University of Saskatchewan; a 4 year Prairie Studies degree from the University of Regina or Saskatchewan. Students may also complete a Liberal Arts Certificate and Liberal Arts Diploma from the University of Regina. There is also some availability to do your second and third year university at Great Plains College depending on the major.

Q How are the university courses taught at Great Plains College?

Many of the courses are taught by local instructors. However to provide students with a variety of options that meet their personal interests, courses are also available through televised, online and independent study delivery.

Q What if I don’t know what I want to study but still want to take university classes?

You can apply for Arts and/or Science at the university of your choice or you can apply to the University of Regina as a casual student or the University of Saskatchewan as an Open Studies student. Once you determine what program you will study those classes you took as an Arts and/or Science student will transfer.

Q Is there someone at the college that can help me choose which courses to take?

Yes. Great Plains College has academic advisors who work closely with advisors from both universities to ensure that you register in the appropriate courses; in addition, the University of Regina has mandatory academic advising for all first years students. Contact a GPC campus near you for assistance.

Q What is a visiting student?

As a Common Visiting Student you may take any course that is offered at a Campus Saskatchewan partner institution (i.e. University of Regina, University of Saskatchewan or SIAST) toward your program. There is no application fee if you use the Campus Saskatchewan Common Visiting Student Form and there will be no transcript fee for sending your course results to your home institution upon completion of the session.

Q What is a casual student?

Casual students (University of Regina only) are students who wish to take courses but are not interested in a degree program at this time. Students may take a maximum of two courses per term for which they have the prerequisites. High school transcripts are not required with submission of the casual student application form.

Q How do I get my textbooks?

Textbooks for University of Regina classes can be ordered online though the UR Self Service or by phone at 1-888-478-2665. Once ordered, books will be sent to students by mail. The Bookstore will not send materials C.O.D; therefore a cheque or money order made payable to the University of Regina must be sent or you may charge your order to your VISA or Mastercard. Textbooks for University of Saskatchewan classes can be ordered by phone at 1-888-214-8888.

Q Are there library services available?

Library services for University of Regina students or visiting students are provided through UREAD. UREAD provides library support for students and instructors including reference assistance library instruction sessions access to electronic resources, and delivery of print materials. Students must have a valid U of R number and be currently registered in a U of R degree course to be eligible for UREAD service. Call toll free at 1-800-667-6014 or visit them online here.

Yes, there is study space available along with resource books for the various university courses offered at the college.
